Initial Consultation:

During our initial consultation, I asked Mark about his experiences on the course and his thoughts and feelings during a round of golf. He expressed his frustration with his inconsistency and his tendency to become easily distracted during a game although really trying to do his best. We also talked about his training routine, physical fitness, and any injuries or health issues that might be affecting his game.

Techniques Used:

Brain Gym -

I used brain gym to help create rapport by mirroring Marks’s movements during the workout, while also helping him set a specific goal

Focus Awareness Technique -

I relaxed Mark and focused his mind

The Power of Suggestion -

I used the power of suggestion to help Mark imagine himself achieving his golf goals. This technique is used to create a positive mental image of the desired outcome, which in turn helps to build confidence and belief in one's abilities

The power of suggestion is where the phrase "I put a spell on you" comes from. The word "spell" actually comes from the Old English word "spellian," which means to talk or speak

This highlights the fact that words are incredibly powerful and can have a significant impact on our thoughts, feelings, and actions

Just as a magician can use spells to influence their audience, sports performers and athletes can use the power of suggestion to enhance their performance. By choosing their words carefully and using positive language, they can create a mindset that empowers them to achieve their goals and perform at their best

“Words and magic were in the beginning one and the same thing, and even today words retain much of their magical power.”

― Sigmund Freud, Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis

The Metaphor of William Tell

I used the Metaphor of William Tell, a legendary archer known for his accuracy and focus, to inspire Mark to improve his skills. This metaphor encouraged him to visualize his shots hitting the target accurately and consistently.

Tunnel Visualization -

I suggested that Mark imagine himself in a tunnel before starting his game to help him avoid distractions and stay focused on his performance. This technique is used to create a visual and mental block from any external stimuli that could impact his game

Reframing -

I helped Mark reframe his negative thoughts and beliefs about his abilities and his game. For example, he believed that he would never be able to achieve the level of performance he wanted and that his mistakes and failures were a reflection of his lack of talent. I helped him see that these beliefs were holding him back and that he had the power to change them.

Brain gym –

To switch Mark's brain on and help him focus on his goal with both sides of his brain, as trying too hard (which he said he had been doing) switches one side off, I used Brain Gym exercises. These exercises helped him develop better coordination, balance, and sensory integration, which in turn helped him stay more focused and relaxed during his game.

Goal Setting -

I helped Mark set specific, achievable goals for his performance on the course. We focused on short-term and long-term goals, as well as the steps he needed to take to achieve them.

Trigggers -

I created a trigger by asking Mark to remember a time when he felt particularly confident and focused during a round of golf. I asked him to visualize that moment and associate those positive feelings with a physical gesture (e.g., touching his thumb to his index finger). I then used this anchor to help him access those positive feelings whenever he needed them.

Results:

Over the course of our sessions, Mark made significant progress in his mental game and his performance on the course.

He reported feeling more focused and confident during rounds and was able to maintain his concentration even when he was under pressure. His coach also noticed an improvement in his consistency and accuracy and attributed it to the mental training he had received.

Mark went on to achieve his goal of breaking 80 for the first time. Using these techniques I helped him reframe negative beliefs, set achievable goals, and anchor positive emotions.

I was able to help Mark overcome his self-doubt and frustration, and achieve his potential on the golf course.
