Initial Consultation:
During our initial consultation, I asked Samantha about her experiences on the court and her thoughts and feelings during a match. She expressed her frustration with her form and her inability to perform at the level she knew she was capable of. We also talked about her training routine, physical fitness, and any injuries or health issues that might be affecting her game.
Techniques Used:
Brain Gym –
I used brain gym to help create rapport by mirroring Samantha’s movements during the workout, while also helping him set a specific goal
Focus Awareness Technique -
I used a Focus Awareness Technique to help Samantha relax and focus her mind, which enabled her to better focus on her goals and the steps required to achieve them.
Timelining -
We went back through Samantha's recent matches and training sessions to pinpoint where the problem started. It became apparent that her struggles began after a tough loss against her main rival. Since then, she had been struggling with her confidence and was finding it difficult to focus on her game.
Reframing -
Samantha believed that she did not have the talent to compete at her highest level anymore. I helped her reframe this belief by reminding her of her past successes and encouraging her to focus on the things she could control, such as her attitude and effort.
The Power of Suggestion -
I used the power of suggestion to help Samantha visualize herself as a successful tennis player. I suggested that she see herself confidently hitting her shots and winning matches. This technique is used to create a positive mental image of the desired outcome, which in turn helps to build confidence and belief in one's abilities.
The power of suggestion is where the phrase "I put a spell on you" comes from. The word "spell" actually comes from the Old English word "spellian," which means to talk or speak
This highlights the fact that words are incredibly powerful and can have a significant impact on our thoughts, feelings, and actions
Just as a magician can use spells to influence their audience, sports performers and athletes can use the power of suggestion to enhance their performance. By choosing their words carefully and using positive language, they can create a mindset that empowers them to achieve their goals and perform at their best
“Words and magic were in the beginning one and the same thing, and even today words retain much of their magical power.”
― Sigmund Freud, Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis
Metaphors For Confidence And Motivation -
Metaphors are powerful indirect suggestions because they engage the listener's imagination and tap into their subconscious mind, making them more receptive to new ideas or perspective
Future Pacing -
I asked Samantha to visualize herself in the future, after achieving his fitness goals. I helped her create a vivid image of what her life would look like and how she would feel. I then used this image to motivate her to take action towards his goals.
EFT Tapping -
I used EFT tapping to help Samantha to calm her nerves and reduce her anxiety levels. We worked on specific triggers that were causing her to feel nervous and stressed during games, and we used tapping to release those negative emotions and create a more positive and relaxed state of mind.
The Metaphor of a Butterfly -
I used the metaphor of a butterfly to help Samantha visualize the process of regaining her form. We talked about how a butterfly goes through different stages before it can spread its wings and fly, and we applied this metaphor to Samantha’s tennis journey. This helped her understand that her current struggles were just a temporary phase, and that with time and practice, she would be able to fly again.
Tunnel Visualization -
I suggested that Samantha imagine herself in a tunnel before starting her matches to help her avoid distractions and stay focused on her performance. This technique is used to create a visual and mental block from any external stimuli that could impact her game.
Goal Setting -
I helped Samantha set specific, achievable goals for her performance on the court. We focused on short-term and long-term goals, as well as the steps she needed to take to achieve them.
Triggers -
I created a trigger by asking Samantha to remember a time when she felt particularly confident and focused during a match. I asked her to visualize that moment and associate those positive feelings with a physical gesture (e.g., touching her thumb to her index finger). I then used this anchor to help her access those positive feelings whenever she needed them.
Results:
Over the course of our sessions, Samantha made significant progress in her mental game and her performance on the court. She reported feeling more focused and confident during matches, and was able to maintain her concentration even when she was under pressure. Her coach also noticed an improvement in her consistency and accuracy, and attributed it to the mental training she had received.
Using these techniques, I helped her reframe negative beliefs, set achievable goals, and anchor positive emotions, allowing her to overcome her mental blocks and regain her confidence on the tennis court.
